Europe gets a single portal for electricity grid connection data across 27 countries
The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and the EU DSO Entity have launched Capacitypedia, a pan-European digital platform aimed at improving transparency and access to information on electricity grid hosting capacity across transmission and distribution networks.
The organisations described the initiative as one of the largest coordination efforts among European electricity operators focused on grid transparency.
Capacitypedia functions as a centralised portal aggregating publicly available information on grid connection capacity published by transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs) across Europe. The platform is intended to complement, rather than replace, existing national portals by providing a single access point for developers, utilities, investors, and industrial consumers seeking information on grid availability across multiple markets.
The platform was developed under Action 6 of the European Union (EU) Grid Action Plan, which aims to accelerate expansion and modernisation of electricity networks. The initiative specifically focuses on improving visibility of available grid capacity for renewable energy projects, energy storage systems, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Country coverage
Capacitypedia includes an interactive colour-coded map showing countries currently providing public hosting capacity information.
The platform currently covers Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Users can access country-specific and operator-specific pages containing technical details and direct links to official grid operator data sources.
Hosting capacity focus
A key focus area of the platform is hosting capacity, which refers to the ability of electricity networks to integrate additional generation, demand, or storage assets without affecting grid stability or quality.
ENTSO-E and the EU DSO Entity said the initiative also aims to support greater standardisation of hosting capacity definitions and methodologies across Europe, including issues related to data granularity, firm versus flexible capacity, and coordination between transmission and distribution systems.
The platform presents information voluntarily shared by participating TSOs and DSOs and is intended to provide a structured overview of grid capacity data available across Europe.
Launch event
Capacitypedia was officially launched during the panel discussion on “Affordable and Engaging Grid Expansion” held on May 22, 2026, at the 12th Energy Infrastructure Forum in Copenhagen.
The organisations said the platform represents an important milestone in transmission and distribution operator cooperation, improving coordination, transparency, and information-sharing across the European electricity sector.
The portal will be updated regularly to maintain current information from participating operators.
About the organisations
ENTSO-E represents 39 TSOs from 26 countries and is responsible for supporting secure and coordinated operation of Europe’s electricity grid.
The EU DSO Entity represents more than 900 DSOs across Europe and focuses on supporting renewable energy integration, digitalisation, and innovation in distribution networks.
