Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is set to begin construction on the 1,600 MW Chandrapura Ultra Supercritical Power Project.
The project has received in-principle approval from the Central Government.
DVC plans to expand capacity at the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Bokaro, Jharkhand, after demolishing decommissioned units. The expansion will require an investment of Rs 165 billion.
The existing plant has two operational units (Units 7 and 8) of 250 MW each, while six units have been retired. The most recent unit, the 8th, was commissioned in November 2011.
The power station is located in Chandrapura, approximately 12 km from Bokaro Steel City and 40 km from Dhanbad. It falls under Bokaro district in Jharkhand, with the district headquarters in Bokaro Steel City. The site is accessible via Chandrapura Junction, Dhanbad Junction, and Bokaro Steel City railway stations. The nearest airports are Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi at 120 km, Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal, Durgapur at 140 km, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata at 315 km. The nearest port is in Kolkata.
The total command area of Chandrapura Thermal Power Station spans approximately 1,884 acres, covering all eight units, an associated residential colony, and an ash pond. The expansion is expected to enhance power generation capacity in the region while utilizing the existing infrastructure of CTPS.
