Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited (SGHIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Energy India Limited (SEIL), signed a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) on April 3, 2025. The agreement marks the formation of a 50:50 joint venture (JV) to develop renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in India.
The JV will focus on setting up renewable power, green hydrogen, and green ammonia production facilities. It will also explore opportunities in bunkering, emissions reduction for port operations, and other emerging green fuel technologies.
BPCL stated that the partnership aligns with India’s energy transition goals. It aims to support the production, operation, and sale of green fuels and their derivatives. The JV will combine Sembcorp’s experience in renewables with BPCL’s infrastructure and petroleum expertise.
Sembcorp currently operates 6 gigawatts (GW) of renewable assets in India. It plans to use this base to enable large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen production. BPCL has set a target to build a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio and become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
