ArcelorMittal has begun delivering clean energy to AMNS India’s Hazira steel facility in Gujarat using its newly operational 1 GW wind-solar hybrid project in Andhra Pradesh.

This renewable power now covers more than 20 per cent of the Hazira plant’s energy needs. The shift is projected to cut annual carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes. It aligns with AMNS India’s goal to lower its steel carbon intensity by 20 per cent by 2030, compared to 2021.

The project, developed by AM Green Energy, a wholly owned arm of ArcelorMittal, was completed in 18 months at a cost of $0.7 billion. It is ArcelorMittal’s first large-scale clean energy project to be fully commissioned.

Spread across 3,100 acres, the project includes 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines. It is expected to generate 2.5 billion kWh of electricity each year. The land area includes 2,400 acres dedicated to solar and 700 acres for wind installations.

A pumped hydro storage system is also part of the project. This component is in the final stages of testing and is due for commissioning by June 2025. Once operational, it will help ensure at least 250 MW of uninterrupted power output.

This project is one of several long-term growth initiatives by ArcelorMittal. These developments are expected to contribute an estimated $1.9 billion in additional annual EBITDA by the end of 2027.
