Powergrid wins Vindhyachal-Varanasi inter-regional transmission project

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has been awarded the project to develop an inter-state transmission system under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process. The Letter of Intent was issued to the company on 16 September 2025.
The project, titled “Inter-regional (NR-WR) transmission system strengthening to relieve the loading of 765 kV Vindhyachal-Varanasi D/c line,” will be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer basis. The estimated cost is Rs 2,368 crore with a targeted completion period of 24 months.
The scope of work includes setting up a 765 kV substation near Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with two 330 MVAr bus reactors, six line bays for loop-in loop-out (LILO) connections, and space for future 765/400 kV interconnection transformers and reactors. Additional provisions include eight line bays with switchable line reactors, one 765 kV bus reactor, four 400 kV line bays with reactors, and two 400 kV bus reactors.
The transmission lines will span across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Key elements include LILO of the 765 kV Fatehpur-Varanasi and Fatehpur-Sasaram single-circuit lines at Prayagraj, construction of the 765 kV Vindhyachal Pool-Prayagraj double-circuit line with line reactors, and reconfiguration of the 765 kV Sasan-Vindhyachal Pool line to connect with Prayagraj.
Seven companies were technically qualified for the bidding process. These included POWERGRID, Resonia Ltd, Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, Enerica Infra 1 Pvt Ltd (a subsidiary of IndiGrid), Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt Ltd, KCC Buildcon Pvt Ltd, and HG Infra Engineering Ltd.
Separately, POWERGRID has paid Rs 574.35 crore to the Ministry of Power as the final dividend for the financial year 2024-25. With this payment, the total dividend, including interim distributions, amounts to Rs 4,297.40 crore for the year.
