Apex Clean Energy has entered a renewable energy certificate (REC) purchase agreement with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the Heritage Wind project.

Located in Barre, Orleans County, New York, the 173.6MW project supports the state’s goal of a carbon-free electricity grid by 2040.

Heritage Wind, set to power 32,000 homes, will begin commercial operations by the end of 2026. Apex CEO Ken Young emphasized the project’s role in advancing New York’s energy leadership while benefiting the local community.

The project received its final permit from the Office of Renewable Energy Siting in January 2022, followed by a modified permit in April 2024. A minor modification request was submitted in May 2024.

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M Harris highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of public-private partnerships like Heritage Wind, including job creation and energy savings. The project will generate $30 million in new revenue for Barre over its lifetime, along with $3.5 million each for the Albion School District and Orleans County, and $1.2 million for a local utility bill discount program. Barre households are expected to save $1,500 on electricity bills during the project’s first decade.

Heritage Wind will create local jobs during construction and operation, support local businesses, and contribute to New York’s renewable energy market.
