Serentica commissions first 200 MWh phase of 1 GWh BESS in Rajasthan

Serentica Renewables, the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group, has commissioned Phase 1 of its 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking its entry into utility-scale energy storage for the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector.

The first phase comprises a 200 MWh BESS designed to improve the availability of renewable power by storing surplus electricity generated during the day and supplying it during periods of peak demand, including nighttime.

The commissioning also marks the beginning of the company’s wider energy storage strategy as it expands battery-backed renewable power solutions for industrial consumers.

Project

The 200 MWh BESS has been developed with a modular architecture that allows operational flexibility, scalability and rapid response capabilities. According to the company, the system stores excess renewable energy produced during daylight hours and discharges it during peak demand periods, helping improve grid stability while supporting greater integration of renewable energy.

Serentica said the Bikaner project supports one of the world’s first time-block Round the Clock (RTC) renewable power arrangements for industrial consumers. The project is intended to demonstrate how battery storage can convert variable renewable generation into dependable 24×7 clean power for energy-intensive industries.

Expansion

The commissioning of the first phase forms part of Serentica’s broader energy storage roadmap. The company plans to build a 7 GWh battery order pipeline over the next two years, with the objective of developing one of India’s largest battery storage portfolios for the C&I segment.

Commenting on the development, Akshay Hiranandani, CEO, Serentica Renewables, said, “Battery Energy Storage Systems will play a defining role in the next phase of India’s clean energy transition by making renewable energy available whenever it is needed. The commissioning of Phase 1 of our 1 GWh BESS is a significant milestone in our journey to deliver reliable, round the clock renewable energy for India’s industrial sector. By integrating advanced storage with renewable generation, we are creating a future ready energy ecosystem that combines sustainability, reliability and flexibility for our customers.”
