Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the top state in LED streetlight installations under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), according to a recent Parliament reply.
Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for Power, stated that 13.1 million LED streetlights had been installed nationwide as of November 7, 2024. Andhra Pradesh accounted for 2.9 million installations or 22.4 per cent of the total.
Telangana ranked second with 1.7 million installations, contributing 13.2 per cent to the national figure.
Other top-performing states included Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala, and Delhi. These top 10 states collectively made up 83.9 per cent of the country’s LED streetlight installations.
The initiative has resulted in an annual electricity saving of approximately 8.8 billion kWh and financial savings of Rs 61.78 billion for municipalities and gram panchayats.
Launched in 2015, the SLNP aims to reduce energy consumption and costs through LED adoption for street lighting. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a joint venture of Central PSUs under the Ministry of Power, implements the programme. EESL finances the projects upfront and recovers costs via annuities from municipalities, ensuring over 95 per cent uptime of installed streetlights without budgetary allocations from the Union government.
