Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) has partnered with Polish firm Hynfra to establish a green ammonia production facility with an initial investment of $1.6 billion.
The plant’s first phase will operate entirely on renewable energy, including solar and wind power.
Surplus electricity will feed Egypt’s national grid, while the facility exports green ammonia to the European Union under long-term agreements.
The project is part of Hynfra’s larger strategy to build five green ammonia plants across Central and Eastern Europe, positioning Egypt as a strategic hub.
The facility will also incorporate green hydrogen production, energy storage, and water desalination technologies.
Egypt is bolstering its renewable energy efforts through supportive legislation, including the Green Hydrogen Production Projects Incentives Law and a streamlined “golden license” program.
EU’ aims to secure sustainable energy, targeting imports of 6 million tons of green hydrogen and 4 million tons of green ammonia by 2030.
