Adani Power Limited plans to set up a 2400 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Pirpaithi in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. The project is being developed on 1,050 acres allotted to the company and will be executed in three phases of 800 MW each.
The company has entered into a 25-year Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) to supply the entire 2400 MW. The PSA was signed on September 12, 2025, following a Letter of Award issued in August.
Concerns have been raised by opposition parties and farmer groups about the manner in which land was acquired for the project, alleging that agricultural land was taken against farmers’ wishes. Environmental concerns have also surfaced, with claims that nearly 10 lakh trees may be cut down for construction. The land has been leased to the developer at a nominal rate of Rs 1 per year.
Adani Power has estimated an investment of about USD 3 billion for the project, which will be built over 60 months. The company stated that the project could create 10,000 to 12,000 jobs during construction and about 3,000 roles once operational. The company secured the bid by offering a supply rate of Rs 6.075 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the plant is expected to add significantly to Bihar’s power capacity, resistance continues over land acquisition and ecological impact.
Adani Power currently operates 18,110 MW of thermal power capacity across several states, along with a 40 MW solar project in Gujarat.
