Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) has been granted a 20-year patent for its innovative self-regenerating transformer breather, designed to protect transformers from moisture ingress and extend their operational lifespan. The patented technology reduces the need for frequent replacement of Silica gel in transformer breathers, a component crucial for preventing moisture damage.
Traditionally, Silica gel in breathers must be replaced 4-6 times before the two-year maintenance schedule of a transformer, but with the new self-regenerating breather, it only needs to be checked or replaced during the regular maintenance schedule. The new technology uses waste heat from the transformer to minimize moisture in the air entering the distribution transformer breather, which helps prevent outages and prolongs transformer life.
Developed by Tata Power-DDL’s engineering team, the technology was successfully tested in December 2015, with a pilot installation of 20 units in 2016-17 showing promising results. The company filed for the patent in 2016.
Tata Power-DDL supplies electricity to over 2 million customers in North Delhi, and this patented technology is expected to enhance the reliability and efficiency of its power supply infrastructure, particularly in challenging weather conditions.
