PGCIL wins Fatehgarh-II synchronous condenser project
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has emerged as the successful bidder for the project, “Installation of 2 Nos. of Synchronous Condensers (SynCon) units at 765/400/220 kV Fatehgarh-II PS,” under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism. The company received the Letter of Intent (LoI) for the project on July 17, 2026.
The project will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis and is intended to strengthen voltage support and improve grid stability at the Fatehgarh-II Pooling Station.
Project scope
Under the project scope, PGCIL will install and commission two Synchronous Condenser (SynCon) units at the 765/400/220 kV Fatehgarh-II Pooling Station, along with associated bays.
Each SynCon unit has been specified to provide dynamic reactive power support of at least +300 MVAr / -200 MVAr and contribute a minimum short-circuit level of 1,200 MVA at the point of common coupling (PCC). The scheduled commercial operation date (COD) for the project is 30 months from the effective date.
The selected transmission service provider will establish the two SynCon units at the 400 kV level of the pooling station along with two 400 kV bays.
The Fatehgarh-II project is expected to improve system strength and support reliable operation of the inter-regional transmission network by enhancing short-circuit levels and dynamic voltage control capabilities at the pooling station.
In May 2026, Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC) announced the incorporation of Fatehgarh II Transmission Limited as a wholly owned subsidiary of PFC Consulting Limited (PFCCL).
