NTPC commissions first 800 MW unit of Patratu Thermal Power Project

NTPC Limited has announced the start of commercial operations for Unit 1 (800 MW) of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) Phase I, developed by its subsidiary Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL). The unit achieved commercial operation at 00:00 hours on November 5, 2025.
With this addition, the NTPC Group’s total installed and commercial capacity has reached 84,849 MW. Unit 1 had earlier been synchronized with the grid on March 11, 2025, following successful trial operations and a dry run of all units under Stage I.
PVUNL, a special purpose vehicle formed by NTPC in partnership with Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), is developing the 2,400 MW Phase I project in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. The project comprises three units of 800 MW each and is being implemented by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) under an EPC contract valued at Rs 18,668 crore.
About 85% of the electricity generated from Phase I will be supplied to Jharkhand to meet its growing demand. Phase II of the project is planned to add an additional 2,800 MW. Coal for the plant will be supplied from the Banhadi coal block in Latehar district, where local communities have granted no-objection certificates for mining activities.
