GE Vernova launches HVDC Competence Center in Berlin
GE Vernova Inc. has launched a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Competence Center at its Electrification facility in Berlin to accelerate energy transition initiatives in Germany and Europe.
The center focuses on developing technology to improve grid stability, enable long-distance power transmission, and integrate renewable energy into power systems.
This facility positions Berlin as a central hub for GE Vernova’s Electrification Systems businesses in Europe, supporting projects in Grid Solutions, Power Conversion, and Solar and Storage.
According to CEO Philippe Piron, the expansion is vital for achieving a net-zero emissions future, with electrification at the core. The center aligns with Germany’s energy transition goals, aiming to generate 80% of electricity from renewables by 2030, and will support the System Stability Roadmap, a government initiative to ensure resilient power infrastructure.
In collaboration with German Transmission System Operators (TSOs), GE Vernova is working on a multi-terminal HVDC solution and is engaged in a 2-GW offshore HVDC transmission program with TenneT for Germany and the Netherlands. The Competence Center will support these initiatives and enhance renewable energy integration in Europe.
As part of the expansion, GE Vernova plans to create 500 new jobs by the end of 2025, with roles for engineers, project managers, and technical staff. This growth reaffirms GE Vernova’s commitment to advancing electrification and decarbonization solutions across the region.
