Yadadri thermal plant Unit‑1 begins commercial operations

Author: PPD Team Date: August 4, 2025

The first unit of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) in Veerlapalem, Telangana, was formally declared commercially operational on August 1, 2025, adding 800 MW to the grid. The unit had previously undergone trial runs and generated infirm power since February but had not been officially commissioned.

This marks the second unit to begin operations at the planned 4,000 MW plant. Unit 2 was commissioned in January. With Unit 1 now online, the operational capacity of YTPS has reached 1,600 MW.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka attributed a two-year delay in commissioning to administrative decisions made under the previous government. He pointed to a change in coal sourcing, from imported to domestic, which required a revised environmental clearance, later obtained under the current administration.

The remaining three units are scheduled for commissioning by January 2026.

The government announced additional measures for project-affected communities and workers. These include employment and rehabilitation for displaced families and provisions for free education and healthcare. The upcoming township is expected to include schools and hospitals.
