Westinghouse Electric Company has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of the eVinci microreactor’s Advanced Logic System (ALS) Version 2 instrumentation and control (I&C) platform by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
This marks the eVinci microreactor as the first of its kind to receive NRC approval for its I&C system, paving the way for autonomous operation.
The ALS v2 platform is a logic-based system that manages safety-critical operations using hardware, reducing reliance on software or computer chips. This innovation minimizes the need for operator intervention, enhancing automation and safety. The NRC’s approval means that the ALS v2 system can now be used in any reactor within the current US fleet.
Westinghouse’s eVinci microreactor offers scalable, carbon-free, and safe energy solutions for a range of applications, from powering remote communities to supporting industries such as mining, oil and gas, and data centres.
Its robust design, minimal moving parts, and long operational life make it suitable for diverse environments, including extraterrestrial locations like the lunar surface.
The reactor also integrates with renewable energy sources and provides flexible energy output for various industrial needs.
