The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the renewal of Xcel Energy’s Monticello nuclear plant operating licence, extending its operations until 2050, pending state regulator approval.

The plant is a key component of Xcel Energy’s strategy to achieve 100% carbon-free electricity. It currently powers over 500,000 homes annually in the Upper Midwest. Xcel Energy CEO Bob Frenzel highlighted that nuclear energy will be crucial for meeting growing electricity demand while advancing clean energy goals.

The renewal follows a rigorous process of inspections and reviews by the NRC, confirming the plant’s compliance with safety and environmental standards. Xcel Energy is also seeking approval from state regulators, after securing prior approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission for operation until 2040.

Together with the Prairie Island nuclear plant, Monticello supplies 30% of Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest electricity, playing a critical role in Minnesota’s goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040.
