Uttar Pradesh has announced a new scheme that offers major relief on overdue electricity bills. The Bijli Bill Rahat Yojana from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd starts on December 1 and provides a full waiver of surcharge and interest for eligible users, along with a cut in the principal amount.

The scheme applies to domestic consumers under LMV 1 with loads up to 2 kW and small commercial consumers under LMV 2 with loads up to 1 kW. It includes a 100 per cent waiver on accumulated surcharge and interest and a 25 per cent reduction on the outstanding principal. Cases linked to electricity theft are also covered through a settlement process that offers relief from FIRs and court proceedings. Consumers can register by paying a fee of Rs 2000 online at the UPPCL website or at division offices. They can pay the remaining dues in instalments.

UPPCL Chairman Ashish Kumar Goel said the scheme is intended to support consumers and improve recovery of old arrears. The discom plans an outreach effort that includes phone calls, notices, media updates, and local camps. It will auto-correct inflated bills based on average consumption and provide three detailed documents to each eligible consumer.
