Unit-1 of Patratu Super Thermal Power Project completes trial operation

Unit-1 (800 MW) of Patratu Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-1 (3×800 MW), operated by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), has completed its trial operation and is now included in the installed capacity of the NTPC Group from October 16, 2025. With this addition, NTPC’s total installed capacity has reached 84,849 MW.

PVUNL had synchronised Unit-1 with the grid on March 11, 2025, and completed a dry run for all units of Stage-1 on the same day, marking key milestones in commissioning. 

PVUNL, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by NTPC in partnership with Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVN), is developing the project in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. Phase I comprises three units of 800 MW each, totalling 2,400 MW, and is being executed under an EPC contract awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) at an estimated cost of Rs 186.68 billion.

Approximately 85% of the power generated from Phase I, over 2,000 MW, will be supplied to Jharkhand. Phase II is expected to add another 2,800 MW. Coal for the project will be sourced from the Banhadi coal block in Latehar district, with local villages granting the necessary no-objection certificates for mining.
