Tidal Sails, CESHS sign MoU for 500 kW tidal energy pilot in Arunachal Pradesh
Norway-based Tidal Sails AS and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop and demonstrate a 500 kW tidal energy pilot project in Arunachal Pradesh.
The proposed project marks a new collaboration between India and Norway in the field of renewable energy and is expected to assess the viability of harnessing kinetic energy from river currents for decentralized power generation.
Pilot project
Under the agreement, Tidal Sails and CESHS will work on the deployment of a 500 kW pilot installation in Arunachal Pradesh using the Norwegian company’s RiverSails technology.
The technology is designed to generate electricity by capturing kinetic energy from moving river currents. According to the company, the concept originated during a sailing regatta, where observations on the relative influence of water currents and wind led to the development of the RiverSails system.
The pilot project is intended to demonstrate the technical and operational feasibility of the technology under Indian conditions.
India-Norway collaboration
The initiative represents a milestone in renewable energy cooperation between India and Norway, with a focus on innovative and decentralized energy solutions.
If successfully demonstrated, the technology could offer an alternative renewable energy option for remote and difficult-to-access regions where conventional grid infrastructure is limited.
Tidal Sails stated that the project aims to provide a clean, cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy solution through the use of river-based power generation.
