Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has been awarded the prestigious Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, a recognition led by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) and the Shanghai Municipality.

This award celebrates significant achievements by cities in implementing sustainable urban development under the new urban agenda.

Thiruvananthapuram is the first Indian city to receive this honour, joining four other award-winning cities: Agadir (Morocco), Melbourne (Australia), Doha (Qatar), and Iztapalapa (Mexico). Mayor Arya Rajendran and Thiruvananthapuram Smart City CEO accepted the award at a ceremony in Alexandria, Egypt.

Key initiatives that contributed to Thiruvananthapuram’s recognition include rooftop solar panel installations on public buildings, conversion of street lighting to LED, delivery of 115 electric buses, provision of 100 electric auto-rickshaws to unemployed youth, and the use of electric scooters for municipal operations.

Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh praised the city’s leadership for this global acknowledgement.
