The Telangana government is developing a 50-year power generation plan with a near-term target of installing 20,000 MW of green energy capacity by 2029–30. The roadmap aims to align future capacity expansion with increasing electricity demand and evolving technology trends, while improving energy security and reducing emissions.

As per the Resource Adequacy Plan for the State of Telangana released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the state’s electricity demand is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.17% between FY 2023–24 and FY 2029–30. To meet this rising demand reliably and cost-effectively, Telangana is planning long-term investments in renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and additional contracted coal-based capacity.

The modelling analysis highlights the following:

  • BESS will be required from FY 2028–29 onward, starting with 217 MW and rising to 1,879 MW by FY 2031–32.

  • Additional coal-based contracted capacity will be needed from FY 2027–28.

  • Short-term and medium-term open access (STOA/MTOA) power purchases will be required to manage peak demand.

  • Solar and wind capacity will increase significantly, with solar projected to rise from 7,399 MW in FY 2023–24 to 19,345 MW by FY 2031–32.

The plan factors in declining solar panel costs and emerging technologies like BESS, aiming to deliver a low-cost, environment-friendly generation mix. Telangana’s renewable energy expansion is positioned to contribute to national clean energy goals while addressing state-level grid stability and affordability.
