Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is set to upgrade its renewable energy infrastructure by replacing aging windmills with a new 40 MW wind-solar hybrid power project. The initiative focuses on boosting clean energy generation in the western region of the state.

In the first phase, TNGECL has identified 110 old windmills with a combined capacity of 47 MW for replacement. The hybrid project will include 22 MW of wind power and 18 MW of solar power. The sites for development are Sulthanpet in Coimbatore, Kethanur in Tiruppur, Puliyankulam in Madurai, Muppanthal in Kanyakumari, and Mullakkadu in Thoothukudi.

The project will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Private developers will lease land, finance construction, and manage operations and maintenance (O&M) for 25 years. After this period, the project will be handed over to TNGECL. The power generated will be supplied to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO).
