SSEN Transmission receives approval for Creag Dhubh-Dalmally upgrade
SSEN Transmission has received approval from Scottish ministers to upgrade the Creag Dhubh-Dalmally overhead line from 132kV to 275kV, a project crucial for supporting renewable energy growth in Argyll and Kintyre. Part of the Argyll and Kintyre 275kV strategy, this upgrade is a key component of SSEN’s £20 billion ($26 billion) Pathway to 2030 programme, which aims to support thousands of jobs and boost local and national economies.
The strategy aligns with the UK and Scottish governments’ goals of enhancing the transmission network to meet clean energy and energy security targets. The project’s planning application faced delays due to objections from Argyll and Bute Council, leading to a local public inquiry. Despite increased costs from supply chain issues, inflation, and legal expenses, SSEN Transmission sees the project as essential for connecting low-carbon electricity generation in the region.
In a related development, SSEN Transmission appointed a consortium including Sumitomo Electric and Van Oord for the Shetland 2 525kV HVDC subsea cable project in May 2024.
