The proposed 3,200 MW Srikakulam Super Critical Power Project by Sumitomo Corporation is facing strong opposition from local communities due to environmental concerns.
The thermal power plant, planned at Vennelavalasa village in Sarubujjili mandal of Amadalavalasa Assembly segment, is estimated to cost Rs 300 billion.
Initially, tribals led protests against the project, citing threats to the environment and natural resources. They also expressed concerns that diverting water from the Vamsadhara project canals to the plant would deprive tail-end agricultural lands of irrigation.
The agitation, spearheaded by Adivasi Samkshema Parishad (ASP), has gained support from residents of about 20 villages in Sarubujjili and Burja mandals. Protesters have been distributing pamphlets and posters to highlight the potential adverse effects on soil and ecology.
ASP State Vice-President Vaba Yogi stated that the thermal plant is not feasible due to its environmental impact and urged the government to establish agriculture-based industries instead. The Human Rights Forum (HRF) plans to visit Vennelavalasa soon to support the ASP-led protests. Additionally, the BC Welfare Association has opposed the project, citing concerns for the backward-class communities in the affected areas.
