The State Board of Wildlife (SBWL), Karnataka, granted conditional approval to Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) for the 2,000 MW Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydel Project on January 28, 2025.
The approval requires minimizing environmental damage within the Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary.
The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 80.05 billion, will utilize the Sharavathi River, with Talakalale as the upper reservoir and Gerusoppa as the lower dam.
