Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has announced that its clean energy gigafactories in Jamnagar, Gujarat, will become fully operational over the next four to six quarters, according to Bloomberg. These facilities are central to the company’s $10 billion renewable energy and green hydrogen strategy, first unveiled in 2021.
The Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex spans 5,000 acres and is located near Reliance’s oil refinery, the world’s largest. Once complete, the complex will manufacture solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, advanced battery systems, hydrogen electrolysers, and fuel cells.
The solar module factory, with a current annual capacity of 10 GW and expandable to 20 GW, has already been commissioned. The battery storage and hydrogen equipment units are expected to follow in phases. Collectively, these units are expected to reduce RIL’s energy costs by at least 25 per cent.
RIL has committed Rs 75,000 crore (US$10 billion) for the initiative, with scope for additional investment. It also plans to explore partnerships for financing and offtake as the complex scales up. The project aligns with RIL’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.
