Premier Energies Limited has introduced India’s first zero busbar (OBB) tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cell, the company announced on February 26, 2026 at the Intersolar exhibition in Gandhinagar.
The OBB architecture differs from conventional 10BB and 16BB solar cell designs. Instead of using thick silver busbars, the design applies a dense matrix of ultra-fine silver lines for current collection. This approach is intended to reduce silver consumption, lower shading losses, and increase power output compared with conventional configurations.
According to the company, the OBB structure improves mechanical flexibility, reduces interconnection stress, and enhances resistance to micro-cracks. These characteristics are aimed at supporting long-term reliability and stable performance, particularly under challenging climatic conditions in India.
Sudhir Reddy, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) at Premier Energies, described the development as a redesign of solar cell engineering rather than an incremental improvement. He stated that lower silver usage combined with higher efficiency and durability strengthens performance economics and sustainability. Chandra Mauli Kumar, Chief Production Officer (CPO), said scaling the OBB technology required high manufacturing precision and process innovation supported by the company’s integrated production capabilities.
