Powergrid wins Rajasthan REZ transmission project under TBCB
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) has been declared the successful bidder for the interstate transmission project titled “Augmentation at Bhadla-III, Ramgarh PS and Kanpur (PG).” The company received the Letter of Intent (LoI) on July 9, 2026.
The project will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) route. REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL) acted as the Bid Process Coordinator.
Five companies qualified for the commercial bidding stage of the project: Adani Energy Solutions Limited, Ceigall India Limited, Dilip Buildcon Limited, H G Infra Engineering Limited and Powergrid, which emerged as the successful bidder.
Project scope
The project involves augmentation and bay extension works at the Bhadla-III and Ramgarh substations in Rajasthan and the Kanpur (PG) substation in Uttar Pradesh.
At the Bhadla-III substation, the scope includes installation of five 500 MVA interconnecting transformers (ICTs), representing the sixth to tenth 400/220 kV ICTs, along with five 220 kV line bays, one 400 kV line bay and two sets of 400 kV sectionalizer bays.
At the Ramgarh substation, the project includes installation of two 1,500 MVA 765/400 kV ICTs (third and fourth units), two 500 MVA 400/220 kV ICTs, two 220 kV line bays and one 400 kV line bay.
At the Kanpur (PG) substation, one additional 1,500 MVA 765/400 kV ICT will be installed as the third transformer at the substation.
Renewable energy integration
The transmission system is designed to strengthen evacuation of renewable energy from Rajasthan, where about 20 GW of solar and wind capacity is planned under the Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) programme.
According to the bid documents, the augmentation at Bhadla-III, Ramgarh and Kanpur will enhance power transfer capability and facilitate transmission of renewable energy to demand centres in northern and western India.
All transmission assets are scheduled to achieve commercial operation by January 20, 2029. As part of the project implementation, the successful bidder will acquire 100% equity in Bhadla Ramgarh Power Transmission Limited, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) incorporated for the project.
