EAC backs thermal power expansions worth over Rs 29,000 crore

The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) for Thermal Power projects has recommended environmental clearance for thermal power expansion projects in Chhattisgarh and Odisha involving a combined proposed investment of more than Rs 29,000 crore. The projects will add 2,920 MW of generation capacity through ultra-supercritical units. Korba Power Limited will expand its thermal power plant capacity from 1,920 MW to 3,520 MW through two 800 MW units at an investment of Rs 16,611 crore, while Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGCL) will expand the Banaharpalli thermal power plant from 1,740 MW to 3,060 MW through two 660 MW units at an estimated cost of Rs 12,717 crore. The EAC also issued conditions related to ash utilisation, greenbelt development, solar installation, and compliance with pending regulatory orders.

IEX electricity traded volume rises 18.6% in May 2026

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded a total electricity traded volume of 12,983 million units (MU) in May 2026, registering an 18.6% year-on-year (YoY) increase amid record electricity demand conditions. The Day-Ahead Market (DAM) recorded 4,417 MU, while the Real-Time Market (RTM) traded 5,529 MU and the Term-Ahead Market (TAM) recorded 2,004 MU during the month. National energy consumption reached 164.98 billion units and peak power demand touched an all-time high of 270.82 GW. The average market clearing price in the DAM rose to Rs 4.88 per unit, while Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) trading volumes declined 65% YoY to 6.10 lakh RECs.

APSPDCL rolls out prepaid smart metering for government services

The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has shifted government electricity services to a prepaid smart-metering system with effect from June 1 across nine districts in Andhra Pradesh. The rollout covers government offices, educational institutions, municipal corporations, public water works, and street lights, with 34,496 government electricity services pre-charged through e-wallets with a combined allocation of around Rs 15 crore. Tirupati district received the highest allocation at Rs 2.29 crore for 4,942 services, followed by Kadapa with Rs 1.98 crore for 4,520 services. APSPDCL said the move is aimed at improving financial transparency, reducing payment arrears, and strengthening the utility’s power procurement capacity.

THDCIL installs Unit-1 MIV at 444 MW Vishnugad-Pipalkoti project

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has completed the lowering and placement of the assembled Main Inlet Valve (MIV) of Unit-1 at the 444 MW Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on June 2, 2026. The company described the development as a key milestone in the project’s electromechanical installation works due to the MIV’s large size, complex assembly requirements, and operational significance. The project comprises four units of 111 MW each in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district and is designed to generate annual design energy of 1,657.09 MU. THDCIL has targeted commissioning of the first unit by March 2027 and the fourth and final unit by September 2027.

India becomes world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025, surpassing the US: IRENA

India’s total renewable energy capacity reached 250,519 MW by the end of 2025, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026. The country added more than 45,000 MW of renewable capacity during 2025, increasing the share of renewables in total electricity capacity to 42.8% from 38.4% in 2024. Installed solar capacity rose to 135,159 MW from 98,139 MW, with India adding more than 37 GW of solar capacity during the year and surpassing the United States to become the world’s second-largest solar growth market. Wind energy capacity increased to 54,511 MW, while renewable hydropower capacity rose to 56,299 MW in 2025.

Atlanta Electricals wins Rs 285 crore PSTCL transformer order

Atlanta Electricals Limited has received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL) for the supply of 23 units of 160 MVA, 220/66 kV power transformers along with Nitrogen Injection Fire Prevention and Extinguishing Systems (NIFPES) and optional spares. The total order value is about Rs 285.15 crore, including Rs 284.51 crore for transformers and NIFPES and Rs 63.67 lakh for optional spares. The company said it has supplied around 200 transformers in Punjab since 2018 with an aggregate installed capacity of nearly 5,000 MVA. Atlanta Electricals reported consolidated revenue from operations of Rs 1,851.52 crore in FY26, while profit after tax (PAT) rose 70.1% to Rs 201.77 crore.

POWERGRID commissions Gujarat ISTS transmission expansion project

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has commissioned the “Transmission Network Expansion in Gujarat to increase ATC from ISTS: Part-B” project aimed at strengthening transmission capacity and grid reliability in Gujarat. The project includes a new 765/400/220 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation at Navsari with multiple interconnecting transformers, reactors, and transmission line bays. The scheme also comprises 400 kV and 765 kV double-circuit transmission lines connecting Navsari with Kala, Magarwada, and Padghe. POWERGRID said the project achieved commercial operation with effect from May 13, 2026, while the Notification for Commercial Operation (DOCO) was received on June 3, 2026.

Pace Digitek targets 10 GWh BESS capacity by October 2026, eyes cell manufacturing entry

Pace Digitek Limited said it is targeting 10 GWh of operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity by October 2026, ahead of its earlier timeline, according to statements made during the company’s investor call held on May 26, 2026. The company currently operates a 2.5 GWh BESS manufacturing facility, while expansion to 5 GWh is under implementation with operations expected to begin from July 2026. As of May 25, 2026, the company’s executable order book stood at Rs 11,338 crore, including around 5.32 GWh of BESS-related orders. Pace Digitek also said it is evaluating backward integration into cell manufacturing and reiterated its FY2027 revenue guidance of Rs 3,200–3,400 crore.
