Fuel stations in India are expected to play a more active role in the power sector, as the government urges petroleum dealers to integrate clean energy solutions. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri called on the country’s 70,000-plus fuel retail outlets to adopt rooftop solar power, install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and upgrade infrastructure with energy-efficient systems.

Speaking at the All India Petroleum Dealers Association (AIPDA) Conclave, Mr. Puri said this transition is part of India’s broader move to reduce dependence on crude oil and expand its renewable energy mix. He stated that fuel stations can serve as key nodes in delivering clean energy across geographies, including remote regions like Ladakh and Lakshadweep.

The minister also highlighted the importance of battery swapping infrastructure at fuel stations to support electric mobility and distributed renewable generation across urban and rural areas.

Dealers were encouraged to work with oil marketing companies (OMCs) to implement these changes, supported by structured training in digital tools and safety practices. Mr. Puri said this shift would position fuel retailers as critical partners in India’s energy ecosystem.
