Danish energy company Ørsted has submitted a proposal for the Long Island Wind project to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
The project is designed to generate over 1.4GW of offshore wind energy, supplying renewable power to one million homes in New York, and is expected to begin commercial operations by 2033.
Long Island Wind is a key component of Ørsted’s Northeast Hub, supporting the region’s clean energy transition. The project represents a multi-billion dollar investment and has the potential to create numerous jobs, contributing to workforce development and strengthening New York’s economy. This builds on Ørsted’s existing commitment in the state, including over $700 million invested in Suffolk County for the Sunrise Wind project.
The project’s approval is contingent upon NYSERDA’s selection, successful negotiations for an offshore wind renewable energy certificate agreement, and Ørsted’s final investment decision. Ørsted already operates South Fork Wind, New York’s first utility-scale offshore wind project, and is currently developing the Sunrise Wind project.
David Hardy, Ørsted Group executive vice-president and Americas CEO, expressed the company’s dedication to advancing New York’s clean energy objectives, highlighting that the Long Island Wind project will create thousands of jobs and drive investments in the state’s supply chain and workforce.
In addition to its projects in New York, Ørsted completed the 518MW Helena Energy Center, combining wind and solar power, in Bee County, Texas, in June 2024.
