NTPC Limited has invited bids from enlisted consultancy firms to conduct feasibility studies for installing small modular reactors (SMRs) at decommissioned thermal power stations (TPS). The tender was issued on 7 April 2025, with the last date for submission set for 18 April 2025.
The shortlisted firms include Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India, EY, KPMG Advisory Services, PwC, A. T. Kearney, McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain & Company, Accenture Solutions, Oliver Wyman, Egis India Consulting Engineers, Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), and WS Atkins India.
The study will evaluate old TPS sites for their suitability for SMR deployment. The scope includes preparing an inception report outlining the methodology, followed by two interim progress reports. The first interim report involves identifying TPSs scheduled for retirement within five years and assessing their compatibility for SMR installation.
Key assessments will cover reuse of existing infrastructure based on residual life, environmental and geographic constraints such as exclusion zones, seismic and flood risks, and population density.
The second interim report will build on these findings, leading to a draft feasibility study report, followed by a final report after incorporating feedback. The consultant will also present the findings to NTPC’s internal stakeholders, including Corporate Planning and the Nuclear Cell.
The entire work is to be completed within two months from the award.
