NTPC approves Rs 20,456 crore investment for Lara Stage-III expansion
The Board of Directors of NTPC Limited has approved an investment of Rs 20,456.70 crore for the Stage-III expansion of the Lara Super Thermal Power Project in Chhattisgarh. The expansion will add two 800 MW units, increasing the plant’s installed capacity from 1,600 MW to 3,200 MW. The approval was granted during the Board meeting held on July 11, 2026.
The Lara Super Thermal Power Project is located at Mahloi, Pussore, in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. The Stage-III expansion comprises two 800 MW coal-fired generating units, adding another 1,600 MW of capacity to the national grid. Once completed, the plant’s total installed capacity will double to 3,200 MW.
The existing station consists of two 800 MW supercritical generating units. Unit 1 was commissioned in 2018, followed by Unit 2 in 2020.
The expansion forms part of NTPC’s ongoing capacity addition programme to support rising electricity demand driven by peak summer consumption and increasing industrial activity.
