NTPC Limited and EDF India Private Limited have signed a non-binding term sheet to collaborate on the development of pumped storage projects and hydro projects integrated with renewable energy initiatives. The partnership will also explore opportunities in the power distribution sector.
As part of this collaboration, the two companies plan to establish a joint venture with equal ownership, subject to approval from the government of India. The joint venture will be responsible for executing hydro and pumped storage projects in India and neighbouring countries, with the flexibility to form subsidiaries or additional joint ventures for project implementation.
NTPC’s association with EDF for hydro dates back to 2001 when EDF CIH was appointed as the engineer for the 800 MW Koldam Hydro Power Plant. The Koldam Project, located on the Satluj River in Himachal Pradesh, was NTPC’s first investment in the hydro sector. EDF provided services from conceptual design review to commissioning, including technical specifications, tender evaluations, and on-site investigations.
NTPC’s under-construction hydro projects include Tapovan Vishnugad, Lata Tapovan, Rammam III, Vishnugad Pipalkoti under THDC, Tehri pumped storage project under THDC, and Kameng under NEEPCO.
NTPC’s total hydropower capacity stands at 3,725 MW, including the 800 MW Koldam project, which it owns. The rest comes from joint ventures and subsidiaries, including the 1,000 MW Tehri project and the 600 MW Kameng project. Other hydro plants under these partnerships include Doyang, Kopili, Koteshwar, Pare, Ranganadi, and Tuirial.
