NLC India and OREDA sign JV to develop 1,000 MW of renewable energy in Odisha
NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) and the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects in Odisha.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Additional Chief Secretary Shri Vishal Dev, IAS.
The proposed projects are expected to support Odisha’s renewable energy expansion plans while strengthening the state’s clean energy infrastructure and energy security.
Project portfolio
The joint venture will develop a diversified portfolio of renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW.
The planned capacity includes 525 MW of Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), 250 MW of wind power projects, and 225 MW of floating solar projects.
The inclusion of energy storage infrastructure is expected to improve grid stability and support greater integration of renewable energy into the state’s power system.
Part of wider energy transition plans
The partnership aligns with Odisha’s broader clean energy strategy and comes as the state increases investments in energy infrastructure. The Odisha government has allocated Rs 4,505 crore to the energy sector in the Budget 2026-27 for strengthening transmission and distribution networks. The allocation also supports the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects, expansion of rooftop solar installations, and promotion of energy efficiency measures.
Recently, the High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA), chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, approved 20 investment proposals worth Rs 76,612 crore across multiple sectors. Among the approved projects are a Rs 10,000 crore investment by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited to establish an ingot, wafer and solar PV cell manufacturing facility in Ganjam district and a Rs 1,709.81 crore solar PV cell manufacturing project proposed by Saatvik Solar Industries Private Limited in the same district.
The approved investment proposals are expected to generate employment for more than 5 lakh people across the state.
Strengthening Odisha’s clean energy ecosystem
The NIRL-OREDA partnership is expected to contribute to Odisha’s efforts to build a comprehensive clean energy ecosystem spanning renewable power generation, energy storage, transmission infrastructure and manufacturing.
The project portfolio will support the state’s renewable energy targets while creating the infrastructure required for future growth in clean energy and emerging green fuel industries.
