NHPC Limited is set to resume survey and investigation (S&I) works for the 750 MW Kuppa Pumped Storage Project, with investment expected to commence in FY 2026. The project will be implemented in Chhota Udaipur, Gujarat.
NHPC and Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2024 for an investment of Rs 40 billion to develop the project. The initiative aligns with efforts by NHPC and the Government of Gujarat to utilize pumped hydro storage as an energy storage solution. The project is also expected to generate employment and contribute to local economic growth.
NHPC operates 28 power stations with a total installed capacity of 7,232.90 MW, comprising 22 hydro projects with a combined capacity of 6,971.20 MW, one wind project of 50 MW, and five solar projects totaling 211.70 MW, including joint ventures.
The company has 16 projects under construction with a combined capacity of 10,804 MW. Of these, nine are hydro projects with a total capacity of 9,314 MW, while seven are solar projects with a total capacity of 1,490 MW. Additionally, nine projects with a combined capacity of 4,291 MW are awaiting clearances, consisting of five hydro projects totaling 4,046 MW and four solar projects totaling 245 MW. NHPC is also conducting survey and investigation works for 10 projects with a total capacity of 9,715 MW, which includes six hydro projects of 5,475 MW and four pumped storage projects of 4,240 MW. Under new initiatives, the company is exploring 16 projects with a total capacity of 27,214 MW, which includes three hydro projects of 13,900 MW and 13 pumped storage projects of 12,690 MW.
NHPC has been a key player in India’s hydropower sector, steadily expanding its capacity while diversifying into solar and wind projects.
