NHPC Limited has resumed commercial operations at all three generating units of the 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station in Sikkim, restoring the hydropower station to its full installed capacity following disruptions caused by the natural calamity of October 2023.

The latest milestone was achieved with the resumption of commercial operation of Unit-3 (170 MW) on July 16, 2026. The unit was successfully synchronised with the National Grid on July 15, 2026, and subsequently operated at its full capacity of 170 MW on July 16, 2026, before being declared under commercial operation.

Restoration timeline

NHPC had earlier resumed commercial operations of Unit-1 and Unit-2, each with an installed capacity of 170 MW, at 17:00 hours on July 13, 2026, restoring 340 MW of generation capacity.

With the return of Unit-3, all three generating units are now operational, bringing the Teesta-V Power Station back to its full 510 MW capacity.

The restoration marks the completion of NHPC’s efforts to revive the project after it sustained severe impacts during the October 2023 natural disaster in Sikkim.

Project significance

Teesta-V is one of NHPC’s key hydropower assets in the northeastern region and contributes renewable electricity to the national grid.

The successful restoration of all generating units is expected to enhance power availability and strengthen hydropower generation in the region.

Commenting on the development, NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta said that the recommissioning of the station demonstrated the company’s technical capabilities and the efforts of its engineering and operational teams in restoring the project under challenging conditions.

The company stated that the restoration of the project reinforces its role in supplying clean and reliable hydropower while contributing to the country’s energy security objectives.
