The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has granted initial approval to carry out an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for the 1,000 MW Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Hydro Power Project in Tamil Nadu.
Located in the Nilgiris district, the project is designed to have a capacity of 1,000 MW (4×250 MW). It will store surplus energy generated from solar and wind sources in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. The project aims to support grid stability and is targeted for commissioning by 2030.
The project will be developed by NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited (NTECL), a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). The estimated investment is Rs 50.05 billion.
