JSW Energy has won a 125 MW/500 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) auction in Kerala.

The project, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), will be connected to the Mylatti 220 kV substation in Kasaragod. JSW Energy secured the project at a tariff of Rs 441,000 per MW per month and qualifies for viability gap funding of Rs 2.7 million per MWh or 30 per cent of the capital cost, whichever is lower.

The project is expected to be commissioned within 15 months of signing the battery energy storage purchase agreement. It can be developed in three phases, beginning with 50 per cent of the MWh capacity, followed by up to two additional phases. Only commercially proven and operational technologies will be used to reduce technological uncertainties.

Meanwhile, in another key development in Kasaragod, a joint venture (JV) of DNV MES India Private Limited, Best Engineering Solutions Kochi Private Limited, and Aryacon Contractors and Engineers Private Limited has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for providing project management consultancy (PMC) services for the 100 MW Cheemeni Solar Power Project with BESS in Kasaragod. The JV quoted Rs 14.5 million for the services.

In December 2024, Renewable Power Corporation of Kerala Limited (RPCKL), a JV of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and SECI, invited bids for the project. The 100 MW solar power project with BESS will be built on 450 acres in Cheemeni village, Hosdurg Taluk, Kasaragod district. The work is expected to be completed within 24 months of contract signing.

This marks the second major BESS contract award this month. Just two weeks ago, Waaree Renewable Energy Technologies Limited secured a Letter of Award (LoA) worth Rs 400 million from Continuum Green Energy (India) Private Limited. Awarded on February 13, 2025, the contract covers EPC works for a 40 MWh BESS supporting a wind-solar power project in Gujarat.
