The Government of Jammu & Kashmir (GoJK) has proposed a 50 MVA, 220/33 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) at Batkote in Pahalgam.

The project is expected to be implemented through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process as part of the state’s transmission plan for 2022-27.

According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Jammu & Kashmir had no targets for transmission capacity additions at 220 kV and above for the financial year 2024-25. Additionally, no new transformation capacity or transmission lines were recorded during the year.

The planned GIS substation could be a step toward improving the region’s power infrastructure, addressing local demand, and enhancing reliability in Pahalgam and surrounding areas.

One of the key developments in the state’s transmission sector is IndiGrid’s selection as the transmission service provider (TSP) for evacuating power from Ratle Hydro Electric Project (850 MW) and Kiru Hydro Electric Project (624 MW).

Meanwhile, Power Finance Corporation Consulting Limited (PFCCL) has invited bids for three new transmission projects, including:

  • Construction of grid substations at Wahipora and Sallar in Kashmir with an allied transmission system.
  • Development of the downstream transmission network from the upcoming 400/220 kV Grid Sub-Station at Siot, Rajouri.
  • Construction of a 220/66/11 kV Grid Station at Baghthali, Kathua, along with LILO of the 220 kV S/C Sarna-Hiranagar Line.

These projects signal efforts to strengthen the state’s transmission and power infrastructure.
