Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to retire all coal-fired power plants by 2040, advancing the previous target of 2056.
At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 19 November 2024, Subianto emphasized the need for global collaboration to achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
The country plans to develop over 75 GW of renewable energy in the next 15 years to replace coal.
Despite these goals, coal remains critical to Indonesia’s energy and industrial sectors, with a record coal production of 720 million tonnes in 2024 and forecasts exceeding 800 million tonnes for the year.
Indonesia also plans to attract international investors to support its renewable energy ambitions, targeting 75 GW of new renewable capacity by 2038.
As one of the largest global greenhouse gas emitters, Indonesia aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 through these measures.
