Iberdrola has received a production licence from the Portuguese Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) for a 274 MW wind project in Vila Real and Braga.
The project involves an investment of €350 million ($369 million) and will integrate with the Tâmega hydroelectric system.
This marks Portugal’s first hybrid wind and hydro energy project, with a production capacity of 601 GWh annually. It is part of the Tâmega power plant system, which includes the Alto Tâmega (160 MW), Gouvaes (880 MW), and Daivoes (118 MW) hydroelectric facilities, with a total investment exceeding €1.5 billion.
Vestas will install 38 Enventus V172 turbines, each with a capacity of 7.2 MW and a height of 114 meters. Local companies such as CJR, Conduril-Socorpena, Painhas, and Proef will develop infrastructure, substations, and power lines. Iberdrola plans to sign a long-term power purchase agreement for the project.
Ecological monitoring will be undertaken throughout construction to minimize impacts on birdlife, flora, habitats, and archaeology. Iberdrola has invested over €2 billion in renewable energy in Portugal over the last 20 years, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable electrification and innovation.
