Hindalco Industries Limited, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned an electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. Built at a cost of Rs 5 billion, the plant spans 5 acres and marks Hindalco’s entry into the EV components space.

The facility focuses on producing lightweight aluminium battery enclosures, critical for improving EV efficiency and crash resistance. It has an initial annual capacity of 80,000 units, which will be scaled up to 160,000 units in the future.

So far, the plant has delivered 10,000 aluminium battery enclosures for Mahindra’s BE 6 and XEV 9e models. Over 3,000 Mahindra EVs are already using these components.

Unveiled on April 25, the plant is designed to meet the growing demand for advanced, lightweight EV parts. Hindalco plans to expand these capabilities to serve other Indian and global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company also aims to supply aluminium structural and crash-relevant parts for both EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
