The Himachal Pradesh government has initiated pumped storage projects (PSPs) with the approval of two key projects: the 1,630 MW Renukaji pump storage project in Sirmaur district and the 270 MW Thana Plaun pump storage project in the Beas Basin, Mandi district. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed the projects have been allotted to Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL), with work already underway.
The Renukaji project will generate 40 MW, and the Thana Plaun hydropower plant (HEP) will produce 191 MW, both featuring dedicated turbines for the PSP system. These efforts align with the Swaran Jayanti Policy, 2021, which prioritizes PSP development. New proposals for PSPs and pre-feasibility reports will be invited every six months.
Additionally, SJVNL has identified four PSPs with a total capacity of 2,570 MW, Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has identified eight projects totalling 13,103 MW, NTPC has proposed two projects with a 2,400 MW capacity, and HPPCL has identified two projects with a potential capacity of 1,900 MW in the state.
