Greenko Energies Private Limited (GEPL) is expected to commission the 1,680 MW Pinnapuram Hydro Electric Power Project by September 2025. The project forms part of the broader Pinnapuram Integrated Renewable Energy Project (IREP) being developed in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh.

The Pinnapuram IREP combines solar, wind, and pumped hydro energy storage in a single integrated system. With an investment of Rs 54.68 billion, it is designed to deliver reliable, dispatchable renewable power on a gigawatt scale.

The pumped hydro component uses water storage to shift renewable energy supply to match demand. This model provides grid-balancing support and improves the integration of variable solar and wind power. Hydro storage has been commercially viable since the 1890s and remains central to renewable transition strategies due to its flexibility and reliability.

Pinnapuram is being positioned as the world’s largest integrated renewable energy storage project. Its design and operational strategy are expected to inform future energy storage models, with potential implications for policy, replication, and scalability in India and globally.
