Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDC) has reported physical progress across four major hydroelectric projects (HEPs) in the region.
The Pakal Dul HEP has reached 66 percent physical progress. Located on the Marusudar river, a right bank tributary of the Chenab, in Kishtwar district, the reservoir-based project is being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Limited (CVPP), a joint venture between JKSPDC and NHPC Limited (49:51). The project involves an investment of Rs 126.69 billion.
The Kiru HEP, with 55 percent physical progress, is also being developed by CVPP. It is located on the Chenab River in Patharnakki village, Kishtwar district. The 624 MW project (4×156 MW) includes a 135-meter-high concrete gravity dam and is being implemented at a cost of Rs 42.87 billion.
The Kwar HEP has achieved 19 percent physical progress. It is a run-of-river scheme being developed across the Chenab near Padyarna village in Kishtwar. The project, also under CVPP, involves an estimated investment of Rs 49.49 billion.
The Chenab Ratle HEP has reached 21 percent physical progress. The 850 MW project (4×205 MW + 1×30 MW) is being developed by Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL), a joint venture of NHPC and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir with 51:49 shareholding. The project is located on the Chenab river and is estimated to cost Rs 62.75 billion.
Additionally, the 930 MW Kirthai Stage-II HEP is expected to be completed by November 2028.
All five projects are located along the Chenab River, one of the three western rivers governed by the Indus Water Treaty, 1960. India suspended the treaty as a punitive measure following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
