Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has received approval to develop four new renewable energy sites in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The sites, covering around 75 km², will accommodate solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy projects.
The developments include three solar PV plants in Al Faya, Al Khazna, and Al Zarraf, and a wind farm in Sila, contributing 4.5GW (AC) of solar PV capacity and up to 140MW of wind capacity. The solar projects align with EWEC’s goal of reaching 10GW of installed solar PV capacity by 2030 and 18GW by 2035.
These projects are crucial to meeting Abu Dhabi’s clean energy targets, with EWEC collaborating with various partners such as the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.
EWEC CEO Othman Al Ali emphasized the company’s role in decarbonizing the UAE’s energy sector and contributing to the country’s sustainability objectives.
This year, EWEC reached milestones such as the financial close on the 1.5GW Al Ajban Solar PV project and received proposals for the 1.5GW Khazna Solar PV project.
Once operational, these projects will help make Abu Dhabi home to five of the world’s largest single-site solar power plants.
