Eskom has reconnected Unit 2 of the Koeberg nuclear power station to South Africa’s national grid, adding 930MW to the country’s power supply. This move supports Eskom’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan to increase capacity by 2.5GW by March 2025.

Unit 2 underwent an extensive long-term operation (LTO) programme, extending its operational life by 20 years. The maintenance included replacing steam generators, conducting inspections, and refuelling. This follows the successful LTO of Unit 1 in 2023, which extended its lifespan until 2044.

Together, Units 1 and 2 provide 1.86GW, enhancing grid stability and mitigating load-shedding. The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is expected to decide on Unit 2’s licence extension in 2025, following Unit 1’s licence renewal in 2024.

Eskom executive Bheki Nxumalo highlighted Koeberg’s role in advancing nuclear innovation and exploring technologies like small modular reactors. Koeberg’s upgrades are expected to yield full benefits by 2026, ensuring reliable baseload power as South Africa phases out coal plants by 2030.

Nuclear energy is also positioned to support South Africa’s climate goals by providing continuous, carbon-free electricity for residential and industrial users.
