The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has recommended grant of Terms of Reference (ToR) for four pumped storage projects (PSPs) in its recent meeting.

The Kotpalli Pumped Storage Project will be developed by Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) with a capacity of 1,800 MW. The project will be located in Shankargarh sub-district, Balrampur district, Chhattisgarh, at an estimated cost of Rs 95 billion. SJVN Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and CSPGCL to support the project.

The 1,000 MW Parsapani Pumped Storage Project will be implemented by Hinduja Renewables Energy Private Limited in Chhatauna village, Kota sub-district, Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh. The estimated project cost is Rs 57.2 billion.

The Upper Kolab Pumped Storage Project is proposed by Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPC) in Koraput district of Odisha. The 600 MW project (4×150 MW) is expected to cost Rs 28.82 billion.

The 1,000 MW Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Hydro Power Project in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu will be implemented by NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited (NTECL), a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). With an estimated cost of Rs 50.05 billion, the project is designed to store surplus solar and wind power and is expected to be grid-connected by 2030.

In addition, EAC recommended an amendment to the Environmental Clearance (EC) for the 1,200 MW Pinnapuram Hydro Electric Power Project (IREP) in Andhra Pradesh. However, the ToR proposal for the Sukhnai Pumped Storage Project was returned.
